iDash or gDash

Why Apple and Google are going after the TV when the world is about mobility, wireless communcation, and advertising is beyond me.

The dash board is the place to be, and Android or iOS could be basis for the next automotive navigation/entrtainment system.  Imagine an iPad like screen in the dash, with google maps, iTunes, search capability, and the ability to download Apps that are unique to the driving experience.  Apple could do it on the iPad or something customized for the vehicle (remove the battery, add AM/FM, make it more heat and cold tolerant), or one of the gps firms, or Clarion or Bose could deliver a device using the Android OS.

The navigation map would overlay weather, could predict traffic and recommend routing for multiple stops based on traffic and weather. Could put gas prices on the screen when the tank is under a 1/4 full. And for revenue there could be location based advertising based on your search history, bio, wish lists.

National Report Card

Where can I go to see where we stand and the trends on public issues?
The first objective should be to identify these measurements, where they are trending and how they compare to the statistics in other places of our world.

The second objective is to put some dollars to each item. What is the cost to move the needle, which objectives represent opportunities.

AppleTV

Wish List for AppleTV

Colors... black, stainless duh
Blue Ray... this is obvious, it would put Apple into a whole new source of revenue
Upgrade the processor and memory... allowing to become a server, gateway device
Make it into a Time Capsule server
Add 1T and 2T models
Add Apps... karaoke, Games, DVR, Visual voice mail, video mail

It is going no where now... and position it so it does not canabilize any rev stream... apps, DVR, and TC would all add incremental revenue

Where are we headed?

Ferreri's ditch radio for iPods

AppleTV needs apps!   Imagine your mail on TV, bill pay, control lights, visual voicemail and call logs

When am I going to get cheap power at night and a way to use it.... recharge my battery (in my Hybrid), run the dish washer, dryer turns on, hot water tank comes on... all because its windy and my gateway connect to see what the power cost forecast (commonly called the weather forecast) and communicated to the key appliances.  My Apple Express or AppleTV or Tivo should be the gateway. All I need is a series of devices that connect... a remote on/off switch for the charger, a thermostat controller for the water heater, a way to switch the dishwasher, a water sprinkler controller, a connector for the security system. All would be connected either over 802.11 or 900/1800 MHz

What will be the next Wave?

For the last two decades start ups funded by Venture Capital from pension assets have ushered in technology revolutions bringing web technologies and web based applications and businesses remaking the way people conduct their lives, allowing people to connect, and making products never available before available, changing and improving our lives.

Now however, the pension money available to start ups is diminished, the web could replace the whole genre, the need for new technology is less interesting and new needs now exist.

Will the Web 2.0 corporation be some amorphous group from the web without "employees". OpenSource is developing software why not the next utility company or automobile? Or perhaps it could be from the banking, lending space, obvious is that fact that the segment is facing turbulent times, excessive salaries (indicating there is room for competition), and it is an electronic industry. Could corporate finance and governance (and transparency) be created by the web?

We have the tools to do some wonderful things available to us now. There are certain human activities that are hard to fathom being done over the web... for example, the assembly of a car, or farming corn in Iowa but in a world where global warming, shortages of oil and water, and the existence of natural disasters (hurricanes, earth quakes, and fires) there must be industries ripe the disruptive implementation of technology to change the dynamics.

Insurance (where 50% of the cost is administrative and 50% is actual insurance)
Finance and banking (where the spread in lending and savings rate is 40%
Retail (where Wal-Mart has a sophisticated CRM/ERP/MRP system) small retailers do not benefit from being able to break down economic order sizes. (but Amazon could).
Traffic patterns - why aren't automobiles connected to the a network and hybrid vehicles start and shut off engines to minimize fuel use.
Public investment in energy, infrastructure, NG fuel systems.

Business Ideas

Retrofit Hybred
  • Focus on the top two platforms
  • Ford F150 and Chevy/GMC 1500 drive trains
  • Will incompass Tahoe, Suburbans, pickups, Expedition.... the vehicles with the worst economy, and to the extent it is stay at home soccer moms, the driving is primarily city where the Hybrid advantage is the best.
  • Plus the resale on these vehicles is in the dumper... say $5000/vehicle... thus if the retrofit can be done for $5000, and the owner keeps the vehicle they in essence have not had to incur any ecomonic cost for the retrofit. Economically it is free.
  • What is involved: Transmission replacement, ECU replacement, batteries.
Network cars
  • Network knowledge of traffic flows and signal timings can optimize flows and provide driver feedback
  • Vehicle can track routes, which are uploaded into Driver Optization Analysis software the teachs drivers how to optimize, based on histoisis, other people on same route etc.
  • Primary change will be driver habit on braking and acceleration, and engine shut off if traffic light is expected to change to stop... ie. No need to use gas if the light will change to red before you get there. Coast down now, allow speed to drop earlier, do not use any gas, and come to a speed now that will maximize the speed when the driver gets to the light. It is better to be going 18 miles an hour when you get to the light, and to brake and stop at the light and have to start from 0.
Network the home
  • Need gateway in the home that can commuicate to a host that provides information on power cost, energy efficiency, environmental greeness.
  • The power company can either charge different rates, or require customers to use the system to get a lower rate, or offer it simply to get people that are conciouness to participate.
  • Idea is the shift significant power uses to the most efficient power generating periods
  • There would be a few points in the household that would target
  • Power outlet to recharging the electric car
  • Pool motors
  • Electic water and air heaters
  • Dishwashers
  • Would run as a service on a linux or windows machine and would run a server that would push instructions to the devices in the home over wireless or X10 protocols. Thus there is a server in the sky that the utility feeds. There would be software that would run on a Windows or Linux / Mac machine (Home Server) that connects to that server an communicates to the other devices, and there are hardware devices with switches that are remotely controled by the computer. (Smart Power Sockets).
NG Retrofit
  • Retrofit of vehicles to NG
  • For public vehicles there would be a lease option on the retrofit to allow municple budgets to easily accomodate the change. ie, cost of lease will be paid by the reduction in fuel cost and the tax benefit will be utilizable by the leasor.
Payment Processor
  • Like PayTrust where bills get sent to PayTrust, are scanned, key data entered and an email sent to the subscriber to review, modify, but pre approved payments are made automatically.
  • This would be modified to take advantage of the iPhone. The bill could be viewed, trends on the amount viewed, useage of utilities graphed,
  • Would tie to Quicken like budget with amounts from credit cards, bank statement viewed which can be gestered to the correct column, eg budget, day, etc.
  • Would have a tie in to expense report processign system, similar to EVS, with policies defined by the employer which would tie into a pre approval system, online policies for employees, portals for access via an intranet and internet.
  • To be truely successful as a business expense service direct ties to AMEX data feed would help, eg. card swipe in taxi would show up on the phone as a transaction within a few seconds and could be slotted into the correct category, day, project, purpose... all unprocessed items would sit in an "inbox" to be moved to the correct category.
  • AMEX would love the app since it eases the user processing encouraging more payments by credit card, increasing their transaction and fee volume.
  • The system would be able to track the category the user generally uses for a payment and will suggest that category.
  • They system would also be able to reconcile to the monthly cc billing to assure all activity has be addressed easing the employee's reconciliation effort.
Entrepreneurship Center
  • Office space
  • Law firm
  • Bookkepper
  • Server/IT/Telecom
  • Conditioned and back up power
  • Hardware Team
  • SME on key tools
  • Board Rooms/Training Rooms
Junk Processing
  • Junk sorter
  • Reclaim electronics
  • Batteries
  • metals

the car to come

An observation: While driving I am either listening to the radio or talking on the phone. Furthermore, the car is the only place I actually listen to the radio and is the place I do most of my music listening. And by the looks of things when I see what other drivers are doing, I would say I am part of the majority.

Shouldn't the XM radio listing be shown on the NAV screen,
Visual Voice Mail
Satellite images
Weather report
Sports scores
Bills to pay
Alarm system on and off control
Updates to the maps

Nav should record where you have been, along with fuel economy, then provide feed back on driving habits to improve economy

Shouldn't the iPhone or Touch be built into the nav system… i.e.… the Touch would sync with iTunes over 802.11 when the car is running and all the content, etc. would be available in the car… which btw is the locale where most humans with cars listen to music (except when they are at their computer).

The car needs to be networked. This would be good for the car companies, carriers, consumer, and cell phone industry. Add another account to my bill... and charge me another $10 a month, plus some coin for each application.

Investment Ideas

Energy
Oil dependence is a huge issue. At the same time energy use will contine to rise for use with data centers. Solar and wind can help hugely. Plus rails if they can improve their point to point delivery. Big issue of course is oil for transport. Boone Pickens believes oil will fall to $85 in Q2 before raising. Is there a way to short via a fund?? Data Centers are huge power users, and growing. Servers use power and turn it into heat that has to be removed. And the mega trends are to make more processing in data centers and less at the end points.. particularly mobile endpoints.... with SaaS, collaboration, content access with consistent experience. etc.

I still don't understand why there is not a car that is built for efficiency. A car needs something like 75 HP to go 70MPH, so make a car with a 100HP motor, and provide acceleration with a battery. It should be intelligent, knowing in advance based on GPS where you are going and knowing when to start the engine, based on where you are headed and its battery level.

Start up Services

why are there not business services that really cater to startups? in a web2.0, SOA sense

real estate, utilities, janitorial
startup level services like voice services
HR-- documentation, policy,
Benefits-- all online
payroll
purchasing-- something that generates PO's ... approved vendors, routing of approvals,
banking-- sweeping cash, minimize checks
expense reporting
payments-- paytrust, matches to PO, all pdf, vouchering/accounting
accounting, budget
network, routers, servers, phones

Hyperconnectivity

It's been talked about... its really about personal connectivity. Seems like there are two levels...

High-speed low latency (gaming, voice, real time video, security)
Low speed, sooner or later (sync of files, back up, temp sensors)

Shouldn't something at the originator id what the requirements are for latency, and QOS
What devices come out of this?? sensors, that turn off and on and sip small amounts of power
Add the auto to the network

Come On Steve... take my money now!

An iPod is so old school.... why do I need to carry it, charge it, plug it in ????

I want to get into my car (keyless), have the car know its me (the fob), adjust my seats, stations, mirrors... and my system in the dash sync ... my music, podcasts, voicemail, weather, maps, recent searchs, etc.

Connecting by 802.11 b/g/n, 802.16d/e, GPRS, Edge, HSDPA, 1X, EVDO rev A/C....

a networked car... no pieces are missing. Just the glue.

Steve, its a gold mine. People are spending $3000 on systems for the car and fretting over spending an extra $100 on a phone. And the carrier can get a data account that does not have to be always on (wow, so they can use free air time!!!!).

iPhone, AMEX application, my Portal

Apple is going to roll out OSX 10.5 with TImeMachine which will require an external hard drive, and their only external hard drive is 40G? Stick a 400G drive, increase the price by $125 and suddenly there is new reason to buy. I would prefer the hard drive to be in the router, but they didn't offer that either.

When are we going to hear what OSX iPhone has? and what tools to develop to the UI are available. I want my phone to be my remote... I want to interface with my Tivo via my phone by touching the TV guide on my phone... I have this already in a $300 device... but its a separate, dumb device that I can't take to work. With iPhone I can!! Drat those walled garden, ATT types. I thought they would be the experts on closed systems after Carter Phone, then the Break Up... allowing Whittaker to roll them all up is really rolling back the clock. Come on Web 2.0 crowd... we really need move them to the current century.

... When am I going to be able to get on My Web Page, and be able to see my contacts from my wireless phone, my voicemail, my bills that need to be paid, my bank accounts, the stocks I own, my EOBs from my insurance company, my calendar, my email, my grocery list, the notification that my cleaners has my stuff ready???? It's my portal... This is not what Yahoo has.... yet.

... when is my iPhone going to get a pop up everytime I hit my company AMEX card??? it should show up, and I should be able to gesture it into a category... Meals, Airfare, Local Transport, Parking& Taxi.. Office Supplies... what are the other silly categories??? and when it pops up... the thing knows the date, it knows the vendor (so it should suggest the same category as last time). And because this will be so awesome and a realitve pain in the ass to spend cash, users will use the AMEX and not cash!! Huge value add!!

Apple, Own the Living Room and Car

Common Steve... you own the teenagers pocket, have the interface, design, and brand.

People do not want and ugly computer in the living room with wires, and yet, MSFT is about to provide a GUI that competes... get on with it and own the living room. Just buy Tivo, move it to your interface, charge $200 and make it make money. 10.5 requires an external harddrive to make Time Machine useful, and the heavy weight content is intended for the living room (video, gaming and music) where should it be store (my vote is connected to the media center). Why not fix the media center interface issue at the same time.... use the iPod interface, or a Tivo remote... the hardware has connectors on the back side. Provide a MIB, and API, and get the user community to tie it to a hardened user GUI for the audio and video controls. Apple wins!! then use that platform for home automation (intercomm, security/HVAC control, lighting control). I want a iPod mini like controller at the wall switch.... it will sense my presnese (maybe based on my touch or based on the bluetooth signal, or based on my car fob signal... ) and do things... my music, my temp, my mail, my alerts, my schedule, my pictures and photographs....

Deploy Tivo/auto... this concept of carrying a device (iPod) around to have our environment is ridiculous. You have to plug it in the car?? or worse plug it into another device so it can send radio waves to the car to hear it on the speakers... that is even more clumsy and inelegant and very unApple like. Put a Mac in the dash, provide the interface, get 4 firms to build the apps: navigation (Garman/Google search), music (iTunes), vmail (Nortel), traffic (Google), weather. Network the thing (Intel/Nortel).

National Issues for Congress

competitive issues
  • Cost of health car
  • Impact of oil
  • Global warming
There was a report in the news that florescent blubs can reduce the impact of air pollution by 10%. This sounds extreme, but given there are probably 5 bulbs per house that get predominantly, congress should offer some national rebate to get people to use these bulbs or LED bulbs. There will be huge pollution, oil, international trade and power plant capital investment implications. This one is simple.

The cost of health care in the face of an aging baby boomer demographic is huge. Several things must be done. The cost of the system must be reduced. Insurance, administration needs to be cut. The actual use of health care must be reduced and become more efficient. The delivery (huge cost in moving from dr to dr, to test, waiting for test results, referals... it is insane. the patient has not econimic value in the process. This must change. there was an article a year ago in Business Week based on a book suggesting that computer modeling and partient/family history could be modeled and greatly impact the use of and cost of health care and pharma. This is in the national interest, and must be funded.

Transportation Systems. Rail for freight and passengers in urban and suburban areas must be funded. A rail corridor from Mexico to Texas for a new deep water port is obvious, but not nationalistic. This must be made a priority if goods from China are key for the next century.

The biggest consumer of oil, and the biggest polluter in the world is the automobile. Firstly we must get big polluters off the road. Old, grandfathered cars and trucks have got to go. Allow fines, impounding, pay credits.

On the wars, protecting our way of life. We soiled our hands. Supported the Shah, then supported Saddam against the Ayatollah, then supported the Taliban and Osama, now Osama says we should stay out, and we move in, then he attacks us as a wake up call, and we move into Iraq where a tyrant supporting one side in a civil war in a country that should be divided to its pre WW2 lines exists... get out, these are 1000 yr old issues, not something we will solve. We have meddled and they have a war going on that is based in culture and family lines. Not something we can solve and provided it does not impact us, should we. Get out. Maybe assist in rewriting maps... be a friend to all. Provided they don't arm and attach us when we aren't meddling stay out of it. --On Korea, they are arming, the bozo is a head case, building a nuclear arsenal, which is their right, except they agreed not to do so. We are obligated to attack and destroy. If the leadership remains, remove it.

Navigation with Google Maps

They could have this thing nailed.. but are missing the vision.

Maps are for mobility, GPS is for location, and a car is what makes up mobile. Put the network in the car! Google must run with out connectivity 100% of the time. Just allow Google to sync on occasion, like when its sitting in the garage to get new content, to sync with where the computer has been, to sync with the music and pod casts, to sync the weather, traffic, satellite, coupons, advertisement etc. What is so difficult??

Computer in the car-- conceptually take a notebook computer throw out the keyboard and screen, stick it under the seat or dashboard somewhere... hook up the video output to the nav screen aux, extend the USB to hook up an iPod, find a power supply that connects to 12v, use a mini wireless keybd and mouse that will snap to the back of the center console lid... (the primary interface must be the touch screen). Now wire in the GPS antenna, and connect a bridge to the ECU to pick up mileage, gas gauge, fuel use... after all you do want to know when to buy gas so that the software can tell you where your fav gas is the cheapest. Plus any diagnostics. Google can do the software. Dell or Apple can do the hardware.

  • I believe many of the places I look at on Google maps will be place I will go
  • I believe that many places I go to, will be places I return to... dropping off the kids... I have to pick them up. Driving out of town to friends.... Going to a lake house...
